Zillow.com receives cease & desist order from the State of Arizona

Per this article http://startupmeme.com/2007/04/16/zillow-becomes-illegal-in-arizona, it appears that the State of Arizona feels that Zillow.com is acting as an unlicensed real estate appraiser by offering its automated valuation serivces.

Here is the original article on the story:

What do you think?

Hi Anthony, it's David from Zillow.

FYI - the letters we have received in this regard are from the AZ Board of Appraisers, not the State. We believe it’s important for home buyers and sellers to have easy access to real estate data and home valuations, so we will continue to make Arizona Zestimates available to all Zillow users.

Thanks for the clarification, although it seems to be a difference in semantics as the Board is overseen by the state, right?

BTW, I am on your side - I think Zillow offers a great service. The state of Arizona is not the best when it comes to legislation in my experience (my wife is from AZ and we have family there), but that is a different topic.

Regards.

Thanks, Anthony.

You are right about the Board being overseen by the state. What I meant to say is that the BoA only has jurisdiction over AZ appraisers.

And what I should have just said is that you can still find Zestimate values on Zillow in AZ: http://tinyurl.com/36fceq :-)

Thanks again,
David
